Abstract

Purpose: The enactment of the patient safety act will have a positive effect on hospital service and raise the quality of all medical and supportive services. This study analyzed the relationship between nurses' working environment and patient safety and identified any factors affecting nursing outcome among nurses from three different general hospitals.
Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive research design was used to collect data through random sampling. A questionnaire was used to identify the relationship and factors affecting nursing outcome. The working condition variables comprised organizational climate or culture, staffing, and workload; the patient safety variables included the gold standard and the sensitivity of infection identification.
Result: Participants took a survey comprising 52 items on patient safety, working environment, and nursing outcome. Nurses' responses regarding the effect of quality nursing service are currently in the process of being analyzed through quantitative and qualitative methods. To identity the relationship between nurse's working environment and patient safety, a total of 213 participants were surveyed. The factors on working environment such as collaborative working relationship, autonomous nursing practice, proper staffing and standardized documents are essential to guarantee patient safety. Well prepared patient safety regulation based on proper legal standards is necessary to create a safe and quality patient environment.
Conclusion: Though low staffing and an overload of nursing work in the clinical setting are common problems in all the nursing departments of the three subjective hospitals, the nursing managers and administrators should strive to change nurses' working conditions in order to improve nursing outcome, which is more patient safety oriented, and improve nurses' job satisfaction. Improvement of nurses work environment, especially increased staffing to reduce nursing workload and a well oriented policy to facilitate clear communication on patient service, will contribute to the increase of patient safety as well as the improvement of nursing service. Learning Objectives: 1. Participants will be able to understand the components of patient safety and nurses' working environment. 2. Participants will be able to identify the relationship between two categories and its effect on nursing outcome.
