Abstract
The long-term use of opioids to manage chronic pain in those with an opiate use disorder (OUD) is dangerous and poses a considerable risk of death. Pain management providers must have protocols and tools in place for OUD screening and referral. If OUD is not managed correctly, such as through provider education, screening, and referral, morbidity and mortality rates will severely affect society (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2020). This quality improvement (QI) project's PICOT was among providers in a pain management treatment center, how will implementing an evidence-based OUD screening tool, compared to no screening tool, affect OUD screening and referral compliance rates over ten weeks? The project used the Plan Do Study Act method of quality improvement. Baseline assessment included reviewing medical records ten weeks before the intervention to gauge pre-implementation OUD screenings and referrals. An educational session for providers taught the providers the new tool and referral protocol for OUD. After implementing the RODS tool, OUD screening improved from 2% to 92%. In addition, referrals for OUD treatment improved from zero referrals to a total of eleven referrals after implementation. Identification and implementation of the RODS tool improved OUD screening and referrals for treatment in the pain management clinic. Although there was an improvement in all quality improvement measures, additional work is needed in several key areas, specifically focusing on longitudinal projects and patient metrics.
