Abstract

The purpose of this capstone project was to bring evidence-based wellness promotion through physical activity (PA) using the World Health Organization (WHO) (2020) guidelines to Psychiatric Mental Health Advanced Practice Nurses (PMH-APRNs) to improve mental health care and provider self-care. The guiding PICOT question was "For PMH-APRNs in community-based mental health practices, will the consistent implementation of the evidence-based intervention of a wellness prescription promoting physical activity based on WHO's (2020) PA Guidelines, compared to no consistent use in current practice, increase the promotion/prescription of PA to their mental health patients and increase the PMH-APRNs' own physical activity over eight weeks?" A quantitative design using the Plan, Do, Study, Act method was used with Nola Pender's Health Promotion Model. Limitations included the use of a small convenience sample. The assumptions were that participants would complete the intervention, thereby increasing their professional promotion/prescription of PA and their own PA. The findings showed the intervention improved/increased PA prescriptions and the provider's PA. There was no correlation between the provider's PA and their prescribing of PA. The WP QI project brought wellness promotion evidence-based research into the routine care of both patients and providers. In addition, it exposed independent nurses to the macro health care system's mental health quality improvement engagement and measurement.
