Abstract
The tremendous changes in the healthcare environment in the United States are increasing the physical and emotional labor of nurses, thus contributing to a decrease in this critical resource. Healthcare leaders are expected to create systems that meet the needs of the customers and to be service oriented to their staff despite declining resources. To be successful, transformational leaders need to lead with heart and to identify and manage the emotional aspects of work-related issues. They require what some term emotional intelligence . Because there is no theoretical consensus for this construct, the purpose of this exploratory, qualitative and quantitative study was to identify the ways in which 26 nurses in senior leadership positions in an acute healthcare organization perceived the role of emotions in their leadership work.
