Abstract
Increased cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) concentrations of stress mediators, such as corticotropin releasing factor (CRF), norepinephrine (NE) and Substance P (Sp) have been reported to be abnormal in several stress-related syndromes (post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, fibromyalgia) which frequently co-exist with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
To determine if CSF levels of CRF, NE and SP differ between IBS and healthy controls and if CSF levels correlate with peripheral measures of HPA axis regulation and clinical parameters.
