Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore hospitalized patients' perceptions concerning overheard staff laughter within the hospital. The research question was: What is the hospitalized patient's perception of overheard staff laughter? The question was answered through the use of phenomenology. It is necessary for the nurse to look at the world through the eyes of the patient. It is this understanding of the patient's subjective experience of overheard staff laughter that may assist the nurse in better meeting the patient's needs.
