Abstract

The research study described and analyzed feminist learning strategies from the viewpoint of nurse educators teaching in accredited baccalaureate nursing programs in the United States. Participants were three comparative groups of nurse educators. A pilot group was nursing faculty from The Sage Colleges. Group I were faculty who had intimate knowledge and expertise of FLS. Authors of article advocating the use FLS were members of this group. Group II was a comparison group of nurse educators chosen from the Web site http://allnursingschools.com.

The study investigated how and to what degree feminist beliefs and values influenced nurse educators, nursing curriculum and nursing practice. All nurse educators (N=45) surveyed reported using at least five feminist learning strategies (FLS) listed in the survey. The least used FLS in the classroom and clinical setting were shared governance, social activism and consensus building across all groups.

Overall, the majority of nurse educators in all three groups considered themselves feminists (66.7%). The nurse educators seemed to understand what it means to be feminist while a smaller but considerable percentage recognized the importance of issues of power inequities in the nursing curriculum to improve the status of nurses and improve clients' health. The study demonstrates a positive relationship between feminist beliefs and values and nursing education at the baccalaureate level. This research argues that this positive relationship holds promise of the new National League for Nursing paradigm for nursing education.
