Abstract
The purpose of this exploratory study was to describe the lived experiences of rural women with systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus). A qualitative research design was used, employing a convenience sample of 20 women with lupus. Participants were identified using a snowball sampling technique. In-depth telephone interviews with a semi-structured format were used to garner information. A phenomenological, narrative and life history approach was used to analyze the data. Seven domains—lupus concept, diagnosis response, perception of cause, lupus triggers, lupus control, living with lupus, and support were used to examine the lived experiences of participants. Twenty-one themes emerged from the data surrounding the domains. Themes were supported with quotes, narratives, and life histories.
