On the dimensions of managerial readiness among middle-level academic managers in Philippine colleges of nursing: An exploratory sequential design

Abstract

The study aimed to establish a valid and reliable research tool to measure managerial readiness among middle-level academic managers in Philippine colleges of nursing. This study employed a mixed methods design, specifically exploratory sequential design. For the qualitative phase of this study, a total of nine participants were purposefully selected for the in-depth interviews, five for the focus group discussions. They were selected on the basis of the following criteria: must be full-pledged registered nurses, currently a full-time employee in a CHEDaccredited college of nursing in the Philippines, must have at least three years of teaching experience, at least three years of experience as a supervisor or coordinator, and at least three years of experience as a dean, associate dean, or program chair/head of a college of nursing in the Philippines. For the quantitative phase of the study, supervisors, coordinators, and deans in various colleges of nursing in the Philippines were purposefully selected. The data were collected and analyzed using thematic analysis to extract the themes which were then used to formulate the managerial readiness scale in the quantitative phase. Factor analysis was used to identify the constructs of the data. The results revealed that the developed managerial readiness scale was factored on five dimensions: leadership and management effectiveness, self-management (intrapersonal) skills, organization conversance, administrative competency, and legal acuity. In addition, the developed managerial readiness scale was evaluated for reliability to determine the internal consistency of items. The reliability of all dimensions was high, indicating that the tool had a good internal consistency. Data integration iv pointed to connecting-building up nature of the integrated data as expected of exploratory sequential studies. Results further showed that being a middle-level academic manager was not an easy designation to fill in. Unfamiliarity with one's roles and functions, facing challenges due to multiplicity of the roles of being a dean, and getting caught in-between the demands coming from the upper management, one's subordinates, and other stakeholders; and dealing with workplace politics and work-life imbalance were among the many concerns that deans face on a daily. All these issues called for the need to garner years of experience as an academic, bettering oneself through formal education and trainings, and the institution of a functional succession planning for middle-level academic managers.
