Abstract

Health literacy is fundamental to promotion, prevention, and maintenance of one's health. It is pertinent to one's ability to obtain, understand, and use information in order to make informed healthcare decisions. The provision of patient-centered nursing care is required by Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and accreditation agencies. An acute care hospital in the Midwest experienced low patient satisfaction scores specific to communication with the nursing staff. In order to increase these scores, a needs assessment was performed to determine the nursing staffs' knowledge of definition of health literacy, its attributes, impact on health disparities, and patient-centered care.
