Abstract

This presentation will describe the process of developing and implementing a comprehensive, grading simulation that incorporates care of a client with multiple high-acuity problems. The presenters will describe the process through which the scenarios were developed: selecting and combining elements to create scenarios that would serve as a terminal capstone scenario experience. They will then illustrate the step-by-step process from selecting the topic, planning the scenarios, pilot testing and implementation of the scenarios, and the eventual process of revision of the original, more specifically high-acuity scenario. The result is a multi-faceted scenario, incorporating multiple aspects of nursing care into the experience for the student. The simulation experience as it currently exists incorporates all of the objectives that are expected of a senior-level student: assessment, skill implementation, collaboration with other members of the health and nursing teams, management, prioritization, and communication techniques. The current evolution of this scenario incorporates elements of mental health, including death and dying, and legal-ethical issues. Also presented will be the processes involved in making the simulation experiences High-Stakes—determining the need, developing the rubric, piloting the assessment, and on-going process of revising to ensure validity and reliability for the student population. The entire process of student and instructor preparation, debriefing, and student evaluation will be discussed. Problems encountered along the way, and solutions to those problems, are included in the presentation.
