Abstract

NPD practitioners at a large academic medical center identified a gap in the attendance at their monthly Nursing Grand Rounds education. In attendance were those whose primary work location was the main hospital campus, with minimal participation from staff at other locations. NPD practitioners introduced a live webinar as an option for attending grand rounds for those working at off-site locations. Links to the live webinar were sent monthly to all RNs across the organization, and nursing leadership granted permission for nurses to participate in the webinar at work or from home. The addition of a webinar option has increased nursing staff participation at ambulatory settings by 75% and as many as 10 clinical sites have been connected at once. Evaluations have supported the use of this technology and discussions within the grand rounds sessions have revealed opportunities for inpatient and ambulatory nurses to support one another. With the current healthcare trend of multiple organizations joining forces to create larger healthcare systems, NPD practitioners may consider using this technology to reach a broader audience.
