Abstract

Academy of Medicine, conducted an analysis on the progress of the Future of Nursing report. In the progress report, the implementation of nurse residency programs (recommendation 3), demonstrated an increase of programs across the country, but operational variability amongst programs still existed. Magnet® designated organizations are required to demonstrate how they effectively transition new graduate nurses, by writing to Structural Empowerment (SE) 7. At an accrediting agency, a research study was conducted investigating how Magnet® designated organizations responded to this criteria. The purpose of the study was to identify common characteristics at Magnet® designated organizations and how they could link to the IOM's recommendation. The sample was twenty four Magnet designated organizations September 2014- April 2015. Through a qualitative analysis of the organization's written documentation and site visit exemplars, six interconnecting themes were identified. These themes represent many of the known concepts in TTP today but variability still exists even in Magnet® designated organizations. This interactive presentation will provide NPD practitioners with a deep dive of the interconnecting themes, evidence of best practices from Magnet® designated organizations, and a charge to decrease variability between TTP across the country.
