Abstract
The nurse preceptor class was formulated to introduce the preceptor to the many facets to precepting. Precepting not only entails validation of technical skills but a realm of other vital components to include critical methods of time management for preceptee, identifying learning styles and how to teach based on the learning style of the preceptee, social interaction and the ward/unit routine and layout just to name a few.
The preceptor may have the knowledge but lack the skills necessary to effectively preceptor a new employee. Precepting requires that the preceptor is well educated on how to teach the adult. This can be challenging for anyone, but the difficulty can be lessened when the preceptor is provided with the necessary education and resources to be successful.
The preceptor class provides the preceptor with evidence based information for precepting the new nurse. The class uses role play, case scenarios, gaming and other interactive teaching methodologies that prepare the preceptor and orientee for a success.
