Abstract

Professional Practice Gap: Nursing Professional Development (NPD) practitioners create educational programs based on facility needs and measure outcomes of learners, yet effects on the system are measured less frequently due to the time and resources required. An NPD practitioner developed a program based on an observed practice gap then measured learning outcomes and impact. The purpose of this project was to evaluate the outcomes of a peripheral intravenous catheter (PIV)-removal training program for Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP) and its impact on nursing practice. Current State: NPD practitioners identified UAPs were removing (PIVs) without standardized competency demonstration and without standardized documentation. Impact on the facility was not being assessed. Desired State: UAPs will successfully demonstrate competency in removing and documenting removal of PIVs. NPD practitioners will evaluate learner's outcomes and impact of the program on nursing practice. Learner Engagement Methods: Education involved 1:1 or 1:2 teaching of PIV removal on a low-fidelity trainer with return demonstration and documentation in the electronic medical record in a simulated setting. Learners completed post-test. Competency demonstration was achieved on their unit with an RN. Outcome: Learning outcomes were measured by comparing the number of UAPs who were trained to those attaining competency (79.3%). Validity of the unit-based competency was measured through chart review and observation. Impact on nursing practice will be assessed through an RN survey of delegation and time management. A centralized class supported with unit-based individual competency assessment is an effective strategy to teach UAPs a clinical skill.
