Abstract

Proper pediatric pain management is important, especially when caring for patients too young to verbalize their quality or quantity of pain. A detailed, constructive education process is needed to make sure that new pediatric nurses, both residents and fellows, understand the premise behind pediatric pain management. Our previous pediatric pain management class was instructor-led and the nurses were not retaining the information to accurately care for these patients. This course was developed to educate these nurses to care for patients receiving pain medications through different modalities; specifically patient controlled analgesia and epidural infusions. Our nursing professional development practitioners chose to flip the classroom using adult learning principles that would facilitate nurse engagement with the goal of better understanding, confidence, and retention. We used a double flip method that included work to be done before class, small group work throughout the class, and then coming together as one group at the end for a review of the information learned. Gamification techniques and learning boosts were used to help the nurses to retain the information once they left the classroom.
