Abstract
Background: Grooming is a term that describes how a predator gains trust with children and their caregivers in order to gain access to sexually abuse a child. In collaboration with the protection program, NPD practitioner embarked on a two year journey to identify methods to train all staff and providers so that they could protect patients from this highly under-reported behavior. The goals were to strengthen and increase protection from potential patient molestation by equipping staff with education and tools to recognize the signs of grooming and take appropriate measures to prevent these devastating incidents.
Methods: Benchmarking with five nationally known pediatric hospitals revealed no known training on this subject. Subsequent development of an online training module provided basic tools to navigate the process of assessing and escalating concerns about potential patient sexual abuse. This online training was posted on the learning management system. All RNs were required to complete the training and pass a post test by 80%.
Conclusions: By the end of 2016, over 1400 RNs will have taken this training. Plans are in discussion to roll out this training to other caregivers. Training on "Grooming" and pedophiles is designed to eliminate preventable harm, a goal of all healthcare organizations.
