Abstract
Session B presented Thursday, September 14, 2017
Purpose: Emergency Department (ED) staff reported frustration with obtaining information about meetings, events, and new information that was disseminated via traditional hospital e-mail. Staff wanted a means of communication with improved accessibility and optimized for mobile use.
Design: Staff development project where the ED Director would establish a private Facebook group with approval from administration and Public Relations Department. This group page would have the highest privacy setting and would be monitored by the ED Director to adhere to hospital established Social Media Policy.
Setting: County Hospital, Suburban level III Trauma Center.
Participants/Subjects: All ED staff participated in this project.
Methods: One month after the go-live of the group, a retrospective survey was sent out via hospital email and the Facebook group. The intent of the survey was to judge staff perception on improvement in various areas of communication, as well as teamwork, positivity, and engagement. Based on a 5 point Likert scale, questions measured the satisfaction of staff and leader communication.in the domains of: Communication of Upcoming Events; Communication of Meetings; Communication of Important Updates; Communication of New Staff; Overall Communication between Staff and Management; Overall Communication between Staff Members; Teamwork in the ED; Positivity in the ED; Staff Engagement in ED activities (e.g., CIT); Attendance at ED events.
Results/Outcomes: In post survey, 93% of staff agreed that overall communication and staff awareness of unit events improved. Furthermore, 80% of staff agreed that engagement and professional development, as well as staff participation in events, improved as a result of implementing social media. Communication of Upcoming Events Improved + 1.7; Communication of Meetings Improved +1.5; Communication of Important Updates Improved +1.6; Communication of New Staff Improved +1.8; Overall Communication between Staff and Management Improved +1.5; Overall Communication between Staff Members Improved +1.3.
Implications: With over 90% of staff surveyed stated they use their smartphone as their primary means of communication, information must continually be made available via mobile devices to ensure the greatest amount of staff can be reached. With the newest generation of employees entering the workforce, mobile communication and multimedia integration will continue to be on the forefront of development. Nursing leaders need to evaluate their staff's preferred forms of communication and consider utilizing social media to deliver their content in a new and unconventional ways.
