Abstract
When the National Council of State Boards of Nursing released their simulation study in 2014, many nursing programs felt like they now had the support for the statement that properly planned and designed simulation-based experiences (SBE's) could replace traditional clinical practice hours. Our nursing program was no different and we set out on a project to replace 25% of all of our traditional clinical practice hours with simulation-based experiences. This was in parallel with designing a new concept based curriculum. The nursing program is a 4-year undergraduate nursing program with clinical practice occurring in years 2, 3 and 4.
This presentation will take the audience through several phases of this development. The first phase was getting the regulatory board that approves nursing curricula to agree to this proposal. The second phase was the development of the SBE's. This included mapping the concepts for each year and creating the SBE's. The SBE's are both mannequin and non-mannequin based, with a variety among the year of the program. We have currently implemented years 2 and 3 of the program, with ongoing development of year 4. Evaluation of each year is underway, and results from this will be discussed.
