Abstract

The INACSL Standards of Best Practice SM have identified the importance of ongoing education for facilitators of simulation, especially in the art of debriefing. This rapidly expanding area of simulation challenges educators to develop facilitation methods that evolve alongside the evidence. One of these challenges is the reliance on scripted debriefing questions. While these are helpful for those new to debriefing, the consequence of this narrowed facilitation is the missed opportunity to explore reflection on action and reflection in action. This 4-hour preconference will address the skills needed to facilitate a deeper exploration of actions and comments made by learners in debriefing. Participants will 1) learn how to construct follow-up questions for more meaningful learning, 2) practice techniques that can lead to deeper reflection, and 3) explore the role of situational awareness in the context of debriefing. With an overall objective of addressing the continuing education needs of the debriefing facilitator, participants will leave the session with an enhanced skill set designed to improve their ability to create a more meaningful debriefing experience.
