Abstract
A few published tools measure the presence of nursing shared governance. However, where are instruments that help councils further develop, evaluate, and sustain their activities and outcomes? This interactive presentation for the first time introduces the Shared Governance Council Function Survey, a new tool designed to assess and guide councils with a template for best practices and assessment of strengths and opportunities of current council functioning.
A national team of shared governance experts in practice and theory convened to generate the Shared Governance Council Function Survey, framed by Donabedian's Quality Model for Structure, Process, and Outcome (1988). The group developed items from published literature and practice, and developed the tool in four phases of psychometric testing: Content Validity by an expert panel; small-sample pilot for clarity, administration, and revision of items; larger pilot to assess reliability for internal consistency and test-retest; and exploratory factor analysis to evaluate construct validity and the final tool.
This one-of-a-kind survey has items with direct bearing on the practice of nurse educators who participate in shared governance councils and are looking to transform the way they function. The final items will provide council members and leaders with tangible strategies for improving council structures, processes, and outcomes. This program will familiarize audience members with identification of best practices and an opportunity for council assessment. The presenters will dialogue with participants about the appropriateness of items and how to apply them to their own organization's situations.
