Abstract

Charge nurses dramatically impact the workflow of a nursing unit but often feel ill-prepared to lead. At our community hospital, we created a charge nurse development class that incorporates four identified themes: 1) Leadership principles: an introduction to the standards by which all leaders at our organization conduct themselves. This invites discussion and reflection on what leadership looks like at the bedside. 2) Key quality concepts: metrics and reimbursement facts, how our facility compares to others and discussions about how the charge nurse can effect change. 3) Communication techniques: feedback scripting that enables the nurses to initiate difficult conversations and transform communication on the unit. 4) Standard work of the charge nurse: A review of selected high stress situations such as earthquake, impaired staff, critical events and incivility. Standard work also includes coaching staff to a higher level of performance by simulating responses to challenging behaviors such as defensiveness, lack of critical thinking, time management or accountability.
Nurses from all areas of the hospital participate in the classes and benefit from the support and expertise of their colleagues. Evaluations have demonstrated that class participants feel empowered to lead and evince change locally and globally.
