Abstract
As a group, Nurse Professional Development specialists do an extraordinary job of creating meaningful learning events to advance hospital goals. However, NPD specialists can become frustrated when education projects do not achieve the desired quality outcomes. Time and energy spent developing training is futile if behavior changes are not applied and sustained after the initial training is completed. Practical application of how to implement refresher training for quality outcomes is a learning need for the NPD professional.
In this session, the presenters explore a training case study focused on preventing hospital acquired conditions (HACs). The study illustrates the art and science of how to "make training stick" using a microlearning approach. Examples of training strategies such as gamification, postcards, songs, rhyming, videos, and one-pagers are shown as cost-effective means to sustain learning and encourage the ongoing application of knowledge. The presentation includes engaging ideas for microlearning that draw upon current events, social media trends, and pop culture.
The presenters discuss the advantages of using a microlearning approach to achieve quality outcomes and show how small, simple solutions can have a big business and clinical impact. In addition to showing real world examples, the presenters share the behavioral and patient outcomes of their work. This dynamic, example packed session focuses on accelerating the transformation of quality outcomes. NPD specialists can apply the examples and methodology demonstrated in this session in their own environments to create transformative training that is engaging, relevant, and cost effective.
