Abstract

The Emergency Department (ED), just like any other unit in an acute care hospital, is vulnerable to patient falls. This ED has seen an increase in patient falls during FY17 compared to FY16. With this increasing trend, the ED leadership team has created a taskforce to address this problem and create a process to prevent future falls by initiating a root-cause analysis. Use of post-fall huddles was recommended by The Joint Commission when a Sentinel Event Alert was issued to respond to problems of patient falls and fall-related injuries in health care facilities. Although literatures that recommend and support the use of post-fall huddles in inpatient and long-term settings are plenty, limited literatures can be found outlining the benefit of its use in the ED.
