Abstract

This session will focus on best practices and pitfalls for developing orientation plans that incorporate prerequisite E-Learning with in-person training for acute, progressive, and critical care novice nurses. Topics will include optimal scheduling for specialty areas, orientation length, and blending the following teaching methods: high and low fidelity simulation activities, case studies (using the flipped classroom approach), preceptor guided bedside application, small group sharing and use of social media to enhance learner application of the content. Interactive lecture and small group sharing will allow Nursing Professional Development (NPD) specialists to identify current challenges in their environment and discuss solutions to improve their own practice. Outcomes from an E-Learning progressive and critical care orientation course will be presented demonstrating improved learner confidence and knowledge when utilized in a blended approach. The NPD specialist will be able to identify tools, resources, and skills to utilize in their own practice for creating the best practice orientation plan.
