Abstract

Oncology nurses face many challenges in our current healthcare system. Some of the most noticeable include an increase in medication errors, escalating costs, and a lack of healthcare provider compassion. When patients do not experience empathy in the healthcare setting, they miss opportunities to build a therapeutic relationship with their provider and may experience additional pain and anxiety. Such challenges have the potential to create a patient experience that is both dehumanizing and dissatisfying.
