Abstract

Methotrexate is a chemotherapeutic agent given infrequently (5-7 times a year) in the Emergency Department as a pharmacologic treatment option for ectopic pregnancy. Emergency Nurses lack the knowledge and experience working with this agent thereby lacking the comfort, confidence, and competency to safety administer. As a result, the Emergency Department nurses would call an oncology nurse to the Emergency Department to administer thereby both interrupting their care and delaying the care of the Emergency Department patient. The purpose of this evidenced-based educational program was to enhance practice ensuring all departmental nursing staff could safely, competently, and confidently administer Methotrexate.
