Abstract
Background: Pain affects millions and is associated with negative outcomes. Educating baccalaureate students from a variety of majors regarding pain will place persons in society that are familiar with the complex, multidimensional nature of pain and be instrumental in meeting the various needs of those experiencing pain.
Method: A course, which utilized science and various liberal arts components, was developed by a doctorally-prepared nurse to teach about the pain experience. The Symptom Management Theory was the organizing framework.
Results: Approximately 60 students majoring in business, psychology, art, English, gender studies, nursing, pre-medicine, sociology and social work, kinesiology, and education have taken this course. Student-learning outcomes were met for this pass-fail course.
Conclusion: This novel course educated students from nursing and other majors regarding the multidimensional experience of pain.
