Abstract

According to the World Health Organization, approximately 830 women die from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth every day, 99% occurring in developing countries. Because quality care can save the lives of women and babies, during this panel presentation Sigma Theta Tau International, in partnership with Johnson & Johnson, will discuss the process and project interventions that have reached over 100,000 people through the Maternal-Child Health Nurse Leadership Academy.

This program is intended to support safe and sustainable communities, ensuring that young nurses are prepared to lead in providing healthy, quality care of women and children and launching interventions that will lead to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #3 of which one target is less than 70 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births. Everyone, nurse and non-nurse, should learn about and advocate for these interventions to be replicated, especially in areas of highest risk, thereby directly responding to the Universal Health Care Key Asks of upholding and sustaining quality of care and the call to leave no one behind.

This interactive panel presentation will provide the framework of the leadership development academy, discuss the importance of this global work, describe successful interventional projects achieved with sustainable outcomes, and encourage the audience to choose the most impactful outcomes from a series of the projects through audience voting and commentary. The panel will discuss ways that these interventions can be brought to communities and replicated around the world.
