Abstract
Mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS) is a disorder that has only gained recognition in the past twelve years. Patients that are diagnosed with MCAS are plagued with abnormal acute and/or chronic mild to severe (anaphylaxis) mast cell activation (MCA) symptoms that affect two of four organ systems. Abnormal MCA has varying pathophysiology and is categorized as primary, secondary, or idiopathic. While similar in outcome, the prevention of MCA and medical management will vary by the subset of MCAS. This journal course reviews the pathophysiology behind MCAS and MCA. Different subclasses and treatment options of MCAS are clarified. Lastly, the anesthetic management for surgical MCAS patients is discussed.
