Abstract

Problem: The prevalence of mental health diagnoses in the United states is at an all-time high and has been identified as a major concern in healthcare. The objective of this project was to increase awareness of mental health status, assessment, and intervention for college students. The focus was on increasing awareness of the incidence of mental health, importance of screening, and resources available in a Midwestern city. Intervention: College level students participated in an educational session on awareness of mental health prevalence, diagnoses, screening, and treatment with focus on personal awareness and awareness for family members. Measures: Pre and post tests were utilized to determine baseline knowledge and feelings towards mental health compared to posttest knowledge and feelings. Results: There was a statistically significant change in three of the five knowledge-based questions and one of the two familiarity of resource questions indicating positive change through education. Conclusions: This was a small-scale sample but did show positive outcomes through the intervention examined. In the future, larger sample size of college students could be beneficial.
