Abstract
Problem: The original problem being addressed by this project was does trauma informed education for forensic nurse examiners improve victim advocates perception of care delivered to patients within 6 weeks? However, after staffing changes within the coordinating agency of victim advocates, the problem statement was adapted to address in forensic nurse examiners, does trauma informed education improve awareness and perception of trauma based care concepts.
Intervention: The project was initially designed to evaluate victim advocates perception of care provided by FNEs after receiving education regarding trauma informed care through an educational module. However, due to the change at the coordinating agency providing victim advocates, the intervention was changed to measure FNEs understanding of trauma informed care through pre and posttests after receiving the trauma informed care education.
Measures: To measure effectiveness of the intervention, a pretest was emailed to FNEs prior to accessing the educational module. The education was provided at a unit staff meeting and online to those who could not attend in-person. The required education lasted 30 minutes and all FNEs were notified via email and text regarding completion. A posttest with the same questions as the pre-test was delivered to FNEs for completion after the conclusion of the education.
Results: The data was converted to be able to complete an independent sample t-test. Correct answers were given the value of one and incorrect answers were given the value of zero. The mean for correct answers in the pretest group was 9.1 and the mean for the posttest group was 9.7. With a p value of 0.096485823 this shows the results of the pretest and posttest are not significantly different from each other.
Conclusions: Forensic Nurse Examiners (FNE) care for the most vulnerable patients, therefore it is necessary to provide trauma informed care to prevent re-victimization of patients. The results showed that the education had little significance of the FNEs understanding of trauma informed care.
