Abstract
Purpose: Women with an increased risk of breast cancer are often anxious about their risk and need additional counseling related to risk assessment, breast surveillance, and risk-lowering interventions. The purpose of the study was to examine perceived anxiety before and after facilitated group visits for this population.
Methodology: In conjunction with their follow-up visits, women in the high-risk breast clinic are invited to attend a one-hour group visit. Based on the Centering model, the focus is on breast education and support as well as health assessment. The small group sessions of 3-6 women are facilitated by the breast surgery NP in the clinic. The structure of the session includes check-in with a self-assessment sheet, which ranks topics of interest, as well as a self-reported anxiety score on a validated tool, the Speilberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). This six item survey asks about current anxiety state using Likert scale options. As the session begins, women often pair up and introduce each other with an ice breaker activity. Focusing on their reported topics of interest, a facilitated discussion ensues for one hour. A variety of education methods are used ranging from myth busters Q&A, standing continuum of risk factors, or connect with someone with a matching nutrition card. Breast exam models are used to practice breast self-awareness. Topics may also include genetics, nutrition, breast imaging, breast reconstruction, and exercise impact on cancer risk. At the end of each group visit, the STAI survey will be repeated.
Results: Results are pending with initial feedback very positive. Facilitated group visits may offer women in the high-risk breast clinic a new model or patient care which provides education and support and may decrease their perceived level of anxiety.
