Abstract
Purpose: Significant resources and high expectations are associated with the adoption of online Patient Portals that integrate tightly with Electronic Health Records. Patient Portals are intended to improve disease management through greater patient engagement while achieving important economic efficiencies associated with scheduling appointments, communicating with providers, obtaining lab results, and ordering medication refills. Specialties like Women's Health where strong communication, managing privacy concerns, and maximizing engagement are priorities stand to benefit most from effective patient portals.
Methodology: This research assessed underlying demand for portal services by comparing current and desired methods for healthcare management of the scheduling, communicating, obtaining results, and ordering refills. Online portal options were compared with traditional in person methods of healthcare management objectively in a survey along with free text subjective data that provided unique insights into their preferences.
Results: The results showed low and declining overall demand for the patient portals formats assessed in the survey due primarily to the uniquely personal nature of healthcare. While scheduling appointments may be efficient through an online portal obtaining a lab results often generates several additional questions that are more amenable to in person or telephone interaction. The convenience and potential efficiencies of effective patient portals are too great to ignore therefore various implications and recommendations for portal developers and decision makers will be highlighted throughout the presentation to maximize the patient experience throughout portal implementation and utilization.
