Abstract
Purpose: In 2010 as part of the annual Goals and Objectives exercise, Aga Khan University School of Nursing (AKUSON), in Pakistan decided that Post RN baccalaureate program would be used as a pilot and offered through blended blending; using both distance learning and face to face interaction in 2014. At present there is no E-learning program at the national level for a Post-RN Programme.
Methods: In order to bring this mandate forward a capstone project was pilot tested using a blended approach and a trio model consisting of student, preceptor and faculty between May and July 2011.A blended delivery approach was used to test out the E-learning strategy by using Moodle. The existing course was reviewed. Students' feedback was elicited before, during and at the end of the course. In addition, faculty development for moodle and use of e-portfolio was organized. Meetings were held with content and technical experts periodically. Final approval came from the curriculum committee.
Results: The pilot study concluded that in order to carry this project forward the following are required: (1) Training and development of faculty for the instructional design and strategies for future online courses. (2) IT personnel assistance is needed consistently in this project; (3) protected time for the faculty to conduct the planning and implementation of this program (includes a needs assessment and follow-up activities); and (4) work collaboratively with our international partners who are active in E-learning.
Conclusion: The lessons learnt from this pilot study will be utilized for planning of the E-learning program at the national level in Pakistan. As a first step in developing the capacity of faculty in E-learning, a training program is being organized to build the capacity of the faculty at the present time.
