Abstract
Session presented on: Thursday, July 25, 2013: The clinical nursing instructor must guide the learning. In the clinical arena it is essential for the clinical nursing instructor to facilitate the acquisition of knowledge. One innovative means by which to foster the acquisition of information is to create an electronic study guide. Utilizing an electronic course management system this 'connected' generation can create a customized study guide. According to Blozen (2010) students reflect on their clinical experience when testing for their licensing exam. The clinical instructor will ask students to research a disease process or a medication their patient was prescribed and 'post' that information on an electronic web site to which all students have access. The clinical instructor verifies the post for accuracy, and the student is asked to present this information at the next clinical pre conference, connecting it to the patient that was presented. The astute clinical instructor will assign students a clinical experience that is relevant to the classroom content that week, which will help to bridge the gap between the classroom and the clinical experience. Over the course of the semester the students cooperatively create an electronic study guide which can be used at the end of the semester, by all students, for final exams as well as at the end of their nursing coursework for those taking a state/country licensing exam. Students enjoy researching medications and topics related to their patient, and on many occasions have requested to research a topic to post on the electronic website. According to Blozen (2010) the clinical experience is where the students feel their textbook comes to life. The creation of an electronic study guide is a great way to capture that clinical picture.
