Issues in Undergraduate Nursing Education

Abstract

Session presented on Sunday, July 24, 2016: Purpose: This study was carried out in order to determine time management skills of nursing students. Methods: This is a cross sectional study and was carried out at G lhane Military Medical Academy (GMMA), School of Nursing between April - May 2015. The study population consisted of 373 students of which 298 student were selected for sampling. The data were collected using a Student Information Form, Time Management Inventory (TMI). The Time Management Inventory was developed by Britton and Tesser. It was developed to determine the time management skills of university students. Validity and reliability studies for the TMI in Turkish society were performed by Alay and Kozak. They adapted the inventory to the variables existing in Turkishsociety and conducted a principal components analysis and factor analysis. Prior to the study; written permission was obtained from GMMA. In analyzing the data, percentage, Kruskal Wallis, Mann-Whitney U tests were used. Results: The students' time management Inventory mean score was 90,86-12,25 (min.53-max.122), the time planning subscale mean score was 53,08-10,06 the time attitude subscale mean score was 24,06-3,30, and the time spanding subscale mean score was 13,72-2,92. When factors affecting the students' time management skills were examined, it was found that age, hastiness, perfectionism, lack of communication, being unplanned, spending much time on the internet and social sharing Networks affected time management significantly (p<0,05). Conclusion: Managing the time has a great importance for the individual to develop emotional and psychosocial health as well as to be successful. According the data, it's necessary to provide training and consultancy regarding time management skills to nursing students whom we determined as having mid- level management skills. Programs aimed at enhancing time management skills should be prepared as part of universities' guidance services. These skills will allow them to learn to make efficient use of their time in various working environments where they can have different roles and responsibilities during their studies or after graduation.
