Abstract
Pain and opioid addiction are not unrelated phenomena. In addition to sharing neural substrates, both are holistic bio-psychosocial-spiritual disorders, and amenable to independent nursing interventions. Reviewed are the pain responses of persons addicted to opioids and addiction assessment in patients receiving opioids for the treatment of chronic pain.
