Abstract

Enhancing Health Information Technology will assist with having standardized documentation processes, reduction in documentation variations that can cause harm to patients, and allow for a clear and concise story of the patients condition to be told. Nurses have always been on the front line providing direct care in hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, and home health agencies; therefore it is important to utilize nurses and support staff when creating or designing Enhanced Health Information programs for inputting data, establishing policies for order entry, time and motion studies to reduce clicks when inputting data for assessments, documenting care and ensuring coordinated delivery of care. Improving and Enhancing Health Information Technology will require extensive literature reviews conducted on process flow, mapping processes and Informatics in Nursing to assist in developing a conceptual patient care process, structure, and outcomes through assessment of the situation by collecting data in a systematic and ongoing process. Continuously assessing data to determine problem areas will assist with identifying expected outcomes. Develop a plan of action utilizing evidenced-based practices, coordinate and implement the plan of action in a safe manner and monitor for desired outcomes. One of Quality Managements elements is the development of policies and procedures for using standards or indicators for gathering data to measure the quality of care. Managerial principles should reflect the organizations assumptions about the responsibilities and desired actions of leaders that create and foster positive work environments. Leaders must have knowledge and understanding why projects fail, therefore there must be adequate planning, data collection, analysis, impact studies throughout to detail the projects contribution which will improve patient care, safety and satisfaction. It is important that all stakeholders (internal and external) are key components in ensuring quality, safety and harm reduction to patients. Fostering a collaborative culture, developing strategic goals that are attainable and realistic throughout the analysis and project design, delivery and implementation stages of the process are the related factors that will determine the success of improved and Enhanced Health Information Technology.
