Background: On September 24, 2013, The First Lady of Tanzania Salma Kikwete visited Monmouth University to foster support and bring awareness to her foundation WAMA Wanawake na Maendeleo, or Women in Development and the launch of its new program, RAPID Women Model. This program aims to improve the quality of life for young girls, women and their families by teaching women strategies such as the impact of birth spacing, gender norms, and reproductive health. The first Lady requested support for the education of Tanzanian nurses and the country's health leaders. She requested nursing books for their Nurses and nursing students.
Method: Some collaborative efforts between the MU School of Nursing and Health Studies and WAMA was considered. Lambda Delta was requested to collect books to be donated to Tanzania. The initiative was presented by Lambda Delta Chapter president during the 42nd Biennial Convention 2013 at the Region 14 conference and dinner. It was positively accepted by the participants and pledges were made. Books were collected from co-workers, colleagues and from schools of nursing in the area by Lambda Delta members. Members of the chapter helped in soliciting, picking-up, storing and packing of the nursing books. Results: At the conclusion of the book collection initiative Lambda Delta was able to collect 433 Nursing books. The books were picked-up by Representative from Tanzanian Embassy last August 15, 2014. Bill Gates Foundation paid the handling and shipment of the books to Tanzania.
Findings: Book drive was very appreciated by recipients. Tanzanian Embassy sent a letter of thanks to Lambda Delta Chapter-Sigma Theta Tau International.
Implications: Shared/donated books help to educate Tanzanian Nurses and potential nursing students to graduate.
