Abstract
In recent years, leaders of national organizations have called for the profession to build the science of nursing education through quality research. Over the past decade, the use of remediation has infused the pedagogy of nursing education and is often cited as an effective strategy in facilitating student success. As a follow-up to Pennington and Spurlock's 2010 research evaluating the effectiveness of remediation and NCLEX-RN success, this systematic review examines the literature related to the topical area since the original publication. The current review consists of both systematic and exploratory searches, with 13 articles meeting inclusion criteria. It was concluded that the evolutionary state of the science surrounding remediation and NCLEX-RN success has not advanced. Within nursing education, conceptual dissonance of the term "remediation" may be hindering development of the science in this area. This presentation will provide insights into the systematic review process and offer directions for future research.
