Abstract
It is estimated that 25 million individuals suffer from moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and of those, 82-93% of sufferers remain undiagnosed. The relationship between OSA and a myriad of health issues has been correlated through study. Untreated OSA places patients at increased risk for hypertension, stroke, cardiac events, decreased mental acuity, post-surgical complications, workplace and vehicular accidents and impaired lifestyle. A poll of local providers revealed knowledge of the issues related to OSA, however, no consistent or formal screening tool was in use. The STOP-BANG questionnaire consists of eight simple dichotomous questions and has consistently shown a sensitivity greater than 85%.
