Abstract

Central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) are key participants in hospital acquired infections (HAIs) that place heavy financial and medical burden on healthcare practices and facilities. Hospitals formulate central line bundles and checklists based off policies and procedures the NHSN provided about indications for central lines, procedures for insertion and maintenance of those central lines, and prevention measures. Critical care units experienced the greatest increase of CLABSIs from a national rate of 0.75 in 2019 to 1.04 in 2020 (Patel et al., 2021). Research shows that these measures and procedures work when intensive care unit nurses are compliant with theses interventions for their patients. Growing evidence supports the use of checklists based on its effectiveness and simplicity within multiple healthcare settings (Ider et al., 2012). This implemented project involved CLABSI review, preparing and implementing a customized central line maintenance checklist, and formulating the monthly CLABSI rates before and after the use of the checklist on the medical intensive care unit in Huntsville Hospital in Huntsville, Alabama.
