Abstract
Ketamine is a unique anesthetic agent with both anesthetic and analgesic properties. Ketamine is primarily a N-Methyl-D-Aspartic acid (NMDA) antagonist that also works on glutamine, nicotinic, muscarinic, monoaminergic and opioid receptors. The uses of ketamine are numerous and include treatment of chronic pain, acute pain, depression, as a multimodal pain adjunct, opioid-sparing agent and as an adjunct in enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols.
