Abstract
Emergence from general anesthesia (GA) can lead to a broad spectrum of cognitive and behavioral dysregulation in the young adult population. This includes emergence delirium (ED), an acute alteration in mental sttus or behavior after surgery that is typically transitory. Emergence delirium is a common application that can present in the immediate post-operative period. In patients undergoing maxillofacial surgery it can often be intensified by pain, anxiety, and fear. Additional risk factors related to ED include male sex, utilization of an endotracheal tube (ETT), volatile anesthetics, and pain-provoking or longer-duration surgeries. Researchers have found that more than hald of patients undergoing ear, face, or throat surgical procedures may be at risk of ED.
