Abstract
Preoperative anxiety can influence postoperative anxiety, pain, and length of stay. Short-acting benzodiazepines, such as midazolam, are routinely given preoperatively to facilitate anxiolysis and reduce anesthetic and analgesic dose requirements. Benzodiazepines can also be associated with serious side effects, such as bradypnea, apnea, and airway collapse. Melatonin is a natural neurotransmitter known to have sedative, anxiolytic, and possibly, analgesic effects. Exogenous melatonin may present a suitable alternative to benzodiazepines without unwanted side effects. In patients aged 18 and older, how does the preoperative administration of melatonin, compared to benzodiazepines, affect anxiolysis, analgesia, and anesthesia requirements perioperatively?
